What does the 1% THC cap mean?
In Texas, medical cannabis products must contain no more than 1% of THC by weight of the final product. This means that a 1-gram gummy may contain up to 10 milligrams of THC, a 2-gram gummy may contain up to 20 milligrams of THC and so on. Regulations for Medical Cannabis in Texas
In Texas, licensed medical cannabis providers must follow a vertical integration model. This means that all operations, including cannabis cultivation, processing and extracting, manufacturing, testing and dispensing must occur under one roof. State regulations prohibit inventory storage of medical cannabis products in multiple locations, so the distribution of products must originate from the main dispensary. Any prescriptions scheduled for pickup at a location outside of the main dispensary must be driven to and from the pickup location each day. How Does a Medical Cannabis Prescription Work in Texas?
Medical cannabis prescriptions written by a registered physician are entered into an online database called the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT). This registry is regulated by the Texas Department of Public Safety and is available to dispensing organizations and law enforcement. CURT records the amount of THC dispensed by dispensing organizations and prevents more than one qualified physician from registering as a prescriber to a single patient. Additionally, there is no limit on the dosage of active cannabinoids, such as THC, that a patient may be prescribed. The dosage is decided by the physician and not the dispensing organization.
Under the Compassionate Use Program, patients are eligible to receive a prescription for medical cannabis for the following conditions:
- All forms of epilepsy and other seizure disorders
- Neuropathy (nerve pain)
- Autism and other spectrum disorders
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Spasticity
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

- Over 150 other incurable neurodegenerative diseases
