What is CBG?
Cannabis contains over 100 compounds (cannabinoids), including CBD, CBG and THC. Cannabigerol (CBG) is sometimes called the "mother of all cannabinoids" because all other cannabinoids are derived from CBGA, an acidic form of CBG. Young cannabis plants are utilized for CBG, because as the plant grows, the amount of CBG present declines. This is why young plants are used for harvesting CBG. As the plant begins to mature, CBG wanes and gives space to other more dominant cannabinoids.
How do CBG and THC work together?
CBG is thought to counteract THC, which means when taken together, the benefits for the patient are greater as the CBG may help mellow the negative side effects of THC and produce what’s called the “entourage effect”.
What does CBG do for you?
Research suggests that CBG may be neuroprotective. It may decrease inflammation and free radicals throughout the body including the nervous system. Reducing oxidative stress helps prevent the destruction of nerve cells involved in movement (e.g. Parkinsons), sensation (e.g. Neuropathy) and thinking (e.g. Alzheimer's).
CBG may also help prevent neuropathy caused by nerve damage from chemotherapy. CBG may affect certain chemicals in the body to lower cholesterol, protect the brain and nerves, reduce swelling, and may act as an appetite stimulant, but more research is needed to further validate these claims.
Can CBG help with anxiety?
CBG is known for its positive effects on energy and focus, which may help with certain types of anxiety. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system through its agonist effect on the CB1 and CB2 receptors. This helps regulate a variety of physiological processes such as memory, appetite, pain sensation, and mood.
In this CBG study from 2022, researchers wanted to know why people use CBG and learn more about the therapeutic effects the users self-reported. Out of the 127 surveyed users, 51% use CBG for anxiety and 41% use it for pain, and most of the surveyed respondents reported their conditions as either “much improved” or “very much improved” by using CBG.
How do CBG and THC work together?
CBG and THC work together by activating the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors found in our brain and body, which are involved in pain modulation and transmission.
In recent studies, both cannabinoids show promise in inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulating the immune system, which are involved in inflammation and pain.
