Nine years ago, medical cannabis in Texas looked very different.

When Texas Original planted its first cannabis seeds on October 31, 2017, the Compassionate Use Program was helping patients living with intractable epilepsy.

Since then, the program has expanded to serve more patients across the state. As we celebrate nine years, we’re looking back at the milestones that have advanced medical cannabis in Texas.

The Early Days of Medical Cannabis in Texas

When we first started growing medical cannabis for Texans, our mission was to create the highest-quality medicine that changes people’s lives.

Over the years, the program grew and expanded to new conditions, product options and locations across Texas. More research became available, more physicians became involved and more Texans learned that medical cannabis was legally available in their home state.

How HB 46 Changed Medical Cannabis in Texas

House Bill 46 brought one of the most significant expansions to Texas’ medical cannabis program. Here are some of the biggest improvements that were made to the Compassionate Use Program.

  • New Conditions: Texans living with chronic pain, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, traumatic brain injury, terminal illnesses and patients receiving hospice or palliative care now qualify for medical cannabis in Texas.
  • Updated THC Regulations: The previous THC cap was replaced with milligram-based dosing, making new products like concentrates and medical cannabis vaporization possible.
  • New Medical Cannabis Products: Pulmonary inhalation was added as an approved way to take medical cannabis under House Bill 46. In 2026, Texas Original released the state’s first medical cannabis vaporizers in strains like Blue Dream, OG Kush and more.
  • Expanded Access Across Texas: Licensed medical cannabis dispensaries can now store medicine at additional locations outside of Austin. With more pickup locations and same-day pickup available in major Texas regions, Texans can get their medicine faster and closer to home.

From South Austin to Bastrop: Growing to Serve More Texas Patients

With more Texans gaining access to medical cannabis, we needed more room to grow. In September 2025, we moved from our 7,700-square-foot South Austin facility into a new 75,000-square-foot headquarters in Bastrop. Nine years after planting our first seeds, our medicine now grows under the Bastrop sun.

From our new home in Bastrop, we serve patients with local Texas-grown medicine at more than 18 locations and through delivery.

As the Program Grew, So Did the Medicine

As access has expanded, so have the ways patients can use medical cannabis. In June 2026, we released the state’s first medical cannabis vaporization devices, bringing patients a fast-acting inhalable option.

A few months later, we introduced our first one-gram all-in-one devices and three Texas-inspired strains: Hill Country Kush, Padre Pineapple and Marfa Lights.

Today, patients can choose from a wide range of medical cannabis products, including concentrates, edibles, topicals, beverages and tinctures.

How Medical Cannabis is Helping Texas Patients

Some of the most important milestones in our nine-year history have come from hearing how medical cannabis has helped the patients we serve.

We’ve heard from Texans who can pick up their grandchildren again, families seeing loved ones with dementia smile again and grieving parents finding peace after unimaginable loss. Others have found relief after years of relying on several prescription medications for chronic pain, PTSD and other conditions.

Behind every story is someone getting back a piece of their life they thought they’d lost. That is what nine years of progress means to us and why we do what we do.
