What Is Medical Cannabis Vaporization?

Medical cannabis vaporization works by heating cannabis extract without combustion. This creates vapor that is inhaled and absorbed through the lungs, allowing the medicine to enter the bloodstream without passing through the digestive system.

Because vaporization bypasses digestion, effects may begin within minutes, making it the fastest-acting medical cannabis option available in the Texas Compassionate Use Program. Medical cannabis vaporization generally takes effect within 1 to 5 minutes, although individual responses may vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for purchasing a medical vaporization device in Texas?

You must be a registered TCUP patient with vaporization specifically authorized on your medical cannabis prescription.

How do I ask my physician to update my prescription for vaporization?

You can contact your prescribing physician and ask if medical vaporization is appropriate for your treatment plan. If approved, your physician will need to submit a new prescription in the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT) to include pulmonary inhalation as an approved method of administration.

How do I open the child-safe packaging of the medical vaporization oil?

Use a finger to press the interior flap against the wall of the sliding tray (where it says "push here") to release the tray, then pull it out by the tab at the end of the box.

How do I assemble the medical vaporization device?

A Texas Original Medical Vaporization Device is comprised of two components, a metered dose battery and a medical vaporization oil cartridge. To assemble:

  1. Remove the cartridge from the packaging. Remove the rubber protective cap from the bottom of the cartridge.
  2. Align the bottom of the cartridge with the connector on the battery. Rotate the cartridge clockwise, screwing it in gently. Continue twisting until the cartridge is secure. Do not over-tighten.

How do I use a medical vaporization device?

To use a Texas Original medical vaporization device:

  1. Press the power button five times rapidly to turn on the device.
  2. Following the dosing instructions provided by your physician, inhale slowly through the mouthpiece to activate the device. After three seconds, the device will blink red and the heating element will shut off, indicating that one dose has been reached.
  3. After use, press the power button five times rapidly to turn off the device. Store the device upright (mouthpiece up) in a cool, dark space and out of reach of children and pets.

How quickly do effects begin?

Effects may begin within minutes when medical cannabis is inhaled. Because onset can be faster than edibles, tinctures or beverages, patients should follow their physician’s instructions carefully and avoid taking additional doses too quickly.

How should I store my device?

Store the device upright (mouthpiece up) in a cool, dark place away from children and pets. Proper storage is important to prevent leaks, clogs and oxidation.

How do I charge my battery?

Remove the cartridge before charging. Use a USB-C cable to charge the device. A full charge takes about 60 minutes. The USB-C cable is not provided with the battery. Instructions are included in the battery box.
