A Day Well Spent in Allen, Texas

The City of Allen blends its small-town railroad roots with modern shopping and dining, making it easy to round out a day exploring before or after a visit to Texas Original.

Allen Heritage Village

This open-air museum on St. Mary Drive preserves several of Allen's oldest homes, outbuildings and churches, relocated and restored to form a walkable park. The centerpiece, St. Mary Baptist Church, originally built in 1887 to serve Allen's African American community, anchors a site that hosts open houses on the third Sunday of each month.

Allen Depot

Also known as the Allen Heritage Center, this yellow replica depot showcases a restored 1910 steam locomotive and rotating exhibits chronicling the city's railroad past. It sits near the site where Sam Bass and his gang carried out the first successful train robbery in Texas history back in 1878.

Old Stone Dam & Water Station

Built in 1874 to supply water to steam locomotives, this dam on Cottonwood Creek is the only one of its kind still standing in the United States. A shaded, tree-lined path through Allen Station Park leads to a bridge overlooking the water, making it a peaceful stop for a walk any time of year.

Credit Union of Texas Event Center

Opened in 2009, this multi-purpose arena seats up to 8,600 for concerts, trade shows and sporting events, and serves as home ice for the Allen Americans hockey team. Its location within The Village at Allen puts it steps away from additional shopping and dining options.

The Moonbeam Bakery

This women-owned bakery on West McDermott Drive specializes in scratch-made pies, cookies and cinnamon rolls, with a rotating lineup that includes gluten-friendly options. Regulars especially praise the turtle cheesecake and peanut butter pie, both made fresh daily.

Talia's Café

Known for its signature croffles, a creative mashup of croissant and waffle, this breakfast and lunch spot in Allen's Twin Creeks area also serves hearty skillets, omelets and fresh-brewed coffee. The cozy atmosphere and attentive service have made it a favorite return spot for regulars in the area.
