TXOG’s Medical Advisory Board

This week, we are celebrating Texas physicians by highlighting a few members of our medical advisory board. These knowledgeable physicians play an essential role in helping create high quality medicine for our patients. In addition, they participate in educational events and support each legislative session by providing factual information about the results they are seeing in their patients. Read more below to learn more about the physicians who are pioneers in the medical cannabis industry in Texas.

Dr. Karen Keough

Dr. Keough, our chief medical officer, is a board-certified pediatric neurologist specializing in treating intractable epilepsy at Child Neurology Consultants of Austin. She was the first female physician to prescribe medical cannabis to a patient living with intractable epilepsy in 2018. Dr. Keough earned her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed her pediatrics residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio. She then pursued a fellowship in Child Neurology at Duke University. After three years in the Air Force as a Child Neurologist, she completed an additional fellowship in EEG and epilepsy at Baylor University School of Medicine.

Dr. Keough has an extensive career in child neurology and is paving the way for the cannabis industry in Texas. Over the years of prescribing medical marijuana, Dr. Keough has found that this medicine has been very impactful for many of her patients. She continues to educate physicians, legislators and the community about the power and truth of medical cannabis. Dr. Keough is an integral part of our team and continues to advocate for increased access to medical cannabis for all Texans.

Dr. Matthew Brimberry

For years, Dr. Brimberry has helped patients navigate the symptoms of muscle spasticity, terminal cancer, ALS and other chronic diseases. In 2019, he was one of the first physicians to be certified by the state of Texas to provide access to medical cannabis for conditions related to palliative care. As the medical director for the Texas Cannabis Clinic, Dr. Brimberry leads a team of physicians registered under the Compassionate Use Registry (CUP) to provide medical cannabis prescriptions exclusively via telehealth appointments for patients living anywhere in Texas.

"Being an active prescriber of medical cannabis allows my patients access to an additional line of treatment that they otherwise are denied," Dr. Brimberry says. "Medical cannabis is a safe and effective alternative to NSAIDs and opioids for some of my fragile patients. I also consider it a safer option than antipsychotics for many of my late-stage dementia patients." Dr. Brimberry is a vital asset to our medical advisory board and also provides education in the cannabis community to inform doctors and patients about the power and truth of medical cannabis.

Dr. Mary Caire

Dr. Caire was the first physician to prescribe medical marijuana to a patient living with terminal cancer in 2019. She is a functional medicine physician, lecturer and leader in DNA-informed precision medicine. Dr. Caire graduated from LSU School of Medicine in 1997 and is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).

"By prescribing medical cannabis, I have been able to help my patients living with cancer more than ever," Dr. Caire says. "Previously, my patients may have needed several different prescriptions to control their pain, nausea, loss of appetite, anxiety and insomnia. Now I can often control all of these symptoms with one prescription of medical cannabis."

Dr. Caire has seen the most success in providing her patients with customized treatment plans focusing on advanced testing diagnostics, nutritional science, physical exercise, stress management, digestive health, and hormonal balancing. Dr. Caire is an important member of our medical advisory board and also advocates for expanding the medical marijuana program in Texas.
