Multiple Sclerosis and Medical Marijuana

Multiple Sclerosis and Medical Marijuana

The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) has increased over the last five decades. Researchers and neurologists are still unsure what causes MS but speculate that genetic and environmental factors may play a role in its development; however, further research is still needed to understand the disease entirely. Recent research suggests that medical marijuana may help reduce muscle spasms, reduce pain, manage fatigue and many other symptoms experienced by those living with MS.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a condition that impacts the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. The immune system begins to attack myelin, the fatty protective layer that surrounds the axons of neurons. The degradation of this protective layer that covers the nerves disrupts signals to and from the brain resulting in numbness, pain, memory problems, mood changes and more. These symptoms may present challenges for someone living with MS but medical marijuana may be a helpful solution.

Medical Marijuana for Multiple Sclerosis

Spasticity is a symptom that is most common in someone living with MS. A research article published in 2009 found an overall decrease in spasticity among patients and increased mobility when treated with medical marijuana. Although more research is needed, the increase in feedback among patients, caretakers and physicians suggests that medical marijuana may be beneficial for patients living with MS. Medical marijuana may not only help relieve symptoms but may also be a viable alternative for patients looking to reduce or discontinue pharmaceuticals.

Medical marijuana may help relieve MS symptoms such as:

  • Spasticity
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Pain
  • Numbness

TXOG Patients Living With Multiple Sclerosis

After several unsuccessful treatments for her MS, Tracy's neurologist told her she was a "no option" patient. Her pain and inflammation made even the simplest tasks challenging and she worried about how that limited her ability to be an involved mom. With medical cannabis, pain no longer holds Tracy back and she has regained her quality of life. In addition to Tracy, Ella-Kate is another TXOG patient that has seen success with medical marijuana. One summer, she noticed that it was becoming difficult to find words and began having trouble with her coordination. She was having horrible leg pain and after multiple surgeries and trials of different pharmaceuticals, she decided to give medical marijuana a try. Now she is able to relax, manage her pain and enjoy life with her kids.
