Compassionate Cultivation Introduces “Brazos,” The Second Texas Original Cannabis Cultivar
Cutting-Edge Breeding Program Enables the Texas Medical Cannabis Leader to Create Original Cultivars that Target Patient Needs AUSTIN, Texas—July 17, 2019—Compassionate Cultivation, the leading medical cannabis company in Texas, continues to break new ground with the introduction of “Brazos,” a new and proprietary cannabis cultivar bred in-house at its “seed-to-sale” facility in Manchaca, Texas. The company is committed to innovation and leading the medical cannabis market across the state of Texas. Like Waterloo, which was introduced last December, Brazos was created with a genetic profile well-suited to produce the 20:1 CBD-to-THC ratio originally stipulated by the Texas Compassionate Use Program (CUP). In addition, Brazos produces plants with a denser structure, leading to a higher yield per square foot of bench space.  “Creating more efficient cultivars like Brazos, which is an ideal plant for large-scale cultivation and increased yield, will help us meet new demand in Texas,” said Morris Denton, CEO of Compassionate Cultivation. “We will continue to develop new cultivars, and build a portfolio of safe, tested options for patients because we know that the best genetics will be the ones we develop ourselves.” With the recent expansion of the state’s Compassionate Use Program, a much larger pool of patients is now eligible for medical cannabis. The new legislation expands access to patients with all forms of epilepsy and other seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis (MS), spasticity, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), autism, terminal cancer, and incurable neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease. The new conditions should lead to increased program participation among qualified doctors and their patients.  “We believe the new cultivars we’re developing could have life-changing potential for thousands of Texas patients,” Mr. Denton said. “With the addition of Brazos, we’re showing that Waterloo was only the beginning of our innovation leadership in Texas cannabis cultivation.”  Background on Brazos This is the latest success of Compassionate Cultivation’s breeding program, which takes plants whose chemical composition may provide the most benefit to patients, and uses them to develop original medical cannabis cultivars. Like Waterloo, the new cultivar’s name “Brazos” is a callback to Texas history. The Brazos River divides East and West Texas, and Washington-on-the-Brazos is a state historic site. Waterloo was the original name of the 1830s settlement that would become the city of Austin.  To create Brazos, Compassionate Cultivation crossed two cannabis strains that are rich in the non-intoxicating compound cannabidiol (CBD). In addition to having high CBD content, Brazos contains significant quantities of the terpene linalool. Terpenes are organic compounds found in all plants, and studies suggest they play a key role in the beneficial effects of cannabis medicine. Emerging laboratory research indicates linalool has anxiolytic and pain-relieving properties.  “Medical cannabis breeding and genetic innovation is central to our mission,” said Taylor Kirk, Vice President of Operations for Compassionate Cultivation. “A patient who receives moderate relief from one type of CBD medicine might have an even better outcome with medicine made from a different genetic chemovar. That’s why we’re developing new chemovars.” Compassionate Cultivation made Texas history when it opened its doors in February 2018 as the state’s first retail dispensary. The Texas-based company is one of three businesses licensed by the Texas Department of Safety to grow cannabis and process it into low-THC formulations of CBD oil.
