Compassionate Cultivation’s “Waterloo” is the First Texas Original Strain
AUSTIN, Texas—Dec. 17, 2018—Licensed Texas medical cannabis provider Compassionate Cultivation continues to make history with the successful harvest of the first legal cannabis strain ever created in the state of Texas. The company’s team of cultivation experts developed this new genetic strain to optimize production of their finished cannabis oil products, which by law must contain at least 10 percent cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis, and no more than 0.5 percent psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).“Compassionate Cultivation is leading the way in bringing the medicinal benefits of cannabis to thousands of Texans across the state,” said Morris Denton, CEO of Compassionate Cultivation. “Now that we’ve developed this proprietary new high-CBD strain, we hope it can become the first to be formally evaluated in a Texas-sanctioned R&D program.”A formal cannabis R&D program is one of the items expected to be considered during the 2019 Texas state legislative session. In honor of its Texas origins, the new strain is named “Waterloo,” which is the original name of the 1830s settlement that would become Austin, the capital city.“We as an industry are really just beginning to unlock the medicinal potential of cannabis,” said Taylor Kirk, Vice President of Operations for Compassionate Cultivation. “At Compassionate Cultivation, we feel a responsibility for helping advance the science while delivering meaningful benefits to all Texans.”Creating High-CBD “Waterloo”A chemical analysis of Waterloo shows it contains over 17 percent CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) by mass with a 30:1 ratio of total CBD to total THC, according to lab tests performed by Compassionate Cultivation. While the trend in commercial cannabis cultivation has long emphasized increasing THC content in strains, Compassionate Cultivation is focused on increasing the levels of other cannabinoids in the plant, including CBD. To develop the Waterloo strain, the cultivation team crossed two carefully selected cannabis varieties: the female plant is the BaOx strain, while the male plant, AC/DC, is one of the best-known high-CBD strains on the market. They chose these strains in order to create a medical cannabis plant with properties that are beneficial to patients who respond well to low-THC cannabis oils.Waterloo has been genetically tested by Phylos, an agricultural genomics company that maps the cannabis genome. Phylos, which offers the world’s largest database of genetic insights for hemp and cannabis, published a report noting its findings on the new strain. The Phylos genotype report confirms that Waterloo is unique compared to the thousands of other varieties in the Phylos global database of cannabis DNA. Epilepsy is the fourth-most common neurological disorder in the world and affects people of all ages, according to the Epilepsy Foundation. Roughly 30 percent of people with epilepsy don’t respond to conventional treatments, and the cannabis compound CBD has emerged as a promising treatment option. Clinical research has shown CBD to be effective in reducing seizures in many patients, as well as helping to alleviate the symptoms of other serious neurological issues.
